The District I ODP is the base level of a National process that promotes players to the U.S. National teams, which represent the United States in International competition, such as the Youth World Cup and the Olympic Games. The ODP is designed to identify and develop the most talented youth soccer players in District I to participate in State, Regional, National and International competition.

In the past, District I has conducted open try-outs. The open try-out format is being eliminated. We are in favor of a nomination and scouting process conducted by qualified coaches. This change is being made throughout all Districts in Cal North and is aimed at identifying the very best youth players in the District, (some of whom were unable or chose not to participate in the try-outs in the past), and promoting more District I players to the State, Regional and National teams.

A coach may nominate any player who he or she believes can successfully compete at the State ODP level. After our ODP coordinators have a chance to review and select, they will let the players know if they have been selected. Only players who have the speed, technical ability, mentality and athleticism to successfully compete for a roster spot on the ODP team should be nominated.

Reasons for change: To identify and develop more elite players in DI; to reduce the “burn-out” factor and potential for injury; to maintain consistency among all Cal North districts; to eliminate conflicts between players, their club teams, and the ODP process; to allow the committed and talented youth player the opportunity to achieve their dreams in soccer.

The State ODP Pool season begins with the selection process in September. On the 2nd and 3rd Sunday of September and October, and on the 1st and 2nd weekend of December tryouts will take place. Please view the CYSA ODP Calendar to see exactly what players report on what dates. Boys and girls try-outs will not be on the same dates. Any player that has been recommended to try-out must attend all the try-outs until they are selected or released. We need to know immediately because we need to submit to the CYSA office by September 1st, no exceptions. Players who do not attend any try-outs can not be considered for the State ODP pool, unless they meet specific criteria. If they are selected to go to the State try there is a fee of $100 to CYSA. There is scholarship money available.

To nominate a player, you should immediately fill out the nomination form and mail to either Boys or Girls ODP Coordinator. Coaches should also register the players on-line as well just in case the form gets lost.
