The San Francisco Vikings Soccer Club (the “Club”) holds tryouts for all its select youth teams. Typically the tryouts occur in February and March for seasonal year that begins in the following August. The tryouts for the Club U9-U14 premier teams (the “Red” teams, currently referred to as the “Travel Teams”) consist of a more formal process involving specific tryout dates. The tryouts for the Club U9-U14 developmental teams (the “White” and “Black” teams, currently referred to as the “Upper House” teams) as well as the older teams are more informal, including either or both a specific tryout date as well as an open invitation for any interested player to contact the team and participate in one or more team practices.

The Club will post a tryout announcement on the Club website at least three weeks prior to the first date of tryouts that will describe the tryout process for the current year for all teams.

All interested players will be offered two opportunities to demonstrate playing ability. The team coach or a Club representative will explain to the parents the financial, player and family commitment expectations for the team and will answer all questions.

The following principles apply to the tryouts:

• Equal opportunity/no discrimination
• Availability of financial aid
• Tryout process
  • Evaluated by independent and/or Club coaches
  • Kids challenged in multiple situations (1v1, small sided games, etc.)
• Evaluation criteria
  • Individual skills (technique)
  • Team awareness (tactics)
  • Fit within team
• Returning players
  • Do they have priority? Equal ability should go to the player who has already been on the team.

Coaches and/or other Club representatives are encouraged to provide any additional information to parents that may bear on a player's selection and/or interest in joining the team, such as:

• Minimum practice and game attendance expectations
• How the team expects to deal with conflicts created by other sports or activities
• Likely practice frequency, times and locations
• Leagues in which the team will likely play
• Likely tournaments
• Number of players the team expects to carry on roster, subject to player interest and the coach's evaluation

The tryouts for the Red teams will consist of at least two formal tryout dates. While attendance at both tryouts will not be mandatory unless stated clearly in the posted information before tryouts begin, coaches may consider attendance at both tryouts as a factor in the ultimate selection decisions. Unless arranged with the Club in advance, players MUST attend one of the tryout dates to be considered for a Red team.

At the first Red team tryout date, the parents in attendance will be given the commitment expectations if not already provided in the posted information.

The decision to accept or reject the player for any of the Club select teams is at the discretion and judgment of the head coach. A variety of factors may be considered by the coach, including:

• Player's ability, based on the tryout and information about past performances
• Player's availability to attend practices, league play, and tournaments
• Player's attitude
• Team's need for players with specific competencies

The selection decision will be made within two weeks of the last tryout date.  The coach and/or Club may choose to notify the parents in writing or by phone.

The team selection decisions are final. Parents are not allowed to contact the coaches or team managers to contest the decision if their child is not selected. If the parents believe that the selection decision was not made in conformity with this policy, they may submit a written protest to the attention of the Club president within one week of receiving the decision.
