Sammy Mar in her UC Merced sweatshirt

Congratulations to Samantha Mar for making it on as a freshman to the UC Merced Bobcats soccer team!  Sammy formerly played for our very own Valkyries 94 team coached by Libby Rappolt.  She went to the UC Merced tryouts as a walk-on, determined for a chance to play college soccer.  Her hard work paid off, and she has been enjoying the season as her teams's holding midfielder, and has been a regular starter!  Keep up the good work Sammy!

Ohana means family, family means no-one gets left behind or forgotten

Part of Hawaiian culture, ohana means family in an extended sense of the term including blood-related, adoptive or intentional. It emphasizes that family are bound together and members must cooperate and remember one another.

The SFVSC U18 Valkyries won the consolation bracket at GGI but they were champions in team spirit!

SFVSC G01 Ravens Red U10 Girls take 2nd place in the Central Marin Premier Challenge!

The Vikings Club newly formed U10 Girls travel team played their first games together as a team at the Central Marin Premier Challenge tournament on August 27-28.

The team handily won its bracket with 29 points, scoring identical 3-0 victories over two NorCal Silver Elite level teams (Bay Oaks Blue Bombers and Mill Valley Rockers) along with a 7-1 win over a CCSL Bronze team (Juventus Eclipse).

The team finally succumbed to a NorCal Gold level team, the Bay Oaks Gold Bombers (15th ranked in NorCal), in the Championship game but had the distinction of being the only team in the tournament to score a goal against the Gold Bombers.

All in all, a great start to a new season for our newly formed Vikings Club U10 Girls travel team playing their first games ever.

SFVSC Vikings Athena Red U13 Girls Win Walnut Creek Summerfest Championship!

Congratulations to our U13G Athena Red team for winning the Division 1 Walnut Creek Summerfest championship this past weekend.  The team advanced to the championship game by tying Central Marin 1-1, beating Davis Legacy 4-1 and beating Walnut Creek Explosion 2-1.  Coach Libby Rappolt rallied the girls with her "San Francisco Girls Love the Heat!" motivational speech and they went on to beat the Mill Valley Rockers 4-1 in the championship game.

The team was also awarded the "Sportsmanship Award" by the field marshals for their classy play . It is rare that the team that wins the tournament also receives the "Sportsmanship Award". Our girls had terrific composure under pressure, especially in a rough , physical game against Walnut Creek, who won the consolation 3rd place game.

The Athena team had great depth, with goals scored by 6 different players and saving tackles made by every player. The effort made to chase the opponent was seen in the number of opponent shots that were rushed by our pressuring defenders and went off target. It took true strength of will to keep sprinting in the heat, but the girls made a terrific effort to overcome their discomfort, and were rewarded with great results.

SFVSC Valkyries take 2nd place in "Hot August Blast-off"

San Francisco’s All-Weather Training Facility

Everyone in the Bay Area knows real estate is frighteningly expensive. Houses sell for upwards of $500k. Not everyone connects this to the fact that we have very little open space for sports teams to train and play. But it stands to reason. When every little park, tennis court, dog run, or sports field could be the site of a multi-million dollar development, you tend to have lots of housing development and few open spaces. When a nice facility is planned, it often encounters opposition from “concerned homeowners” who don’t want people and traffic around them on weekends and evenings. The decision to install artificial turf, which makes fields playable all through the year, also raises hackles of environmentalists who see natural park land disappearing to make room for it.

Today's pitch is 30 yards wide and six miles long

Coaching in these parts is not simply a matter of knowing your Xs and Os. You have to know where you can find space to train, both through the official channels and otherwise. If you’re not training with floodlights you have to know what time the sun goes down. Like housewives comparing grocery prices, coaches gather in dive bars, conversing in hushed tones about the latest on field space. Are the Park & Rec guys checking permits? How bad are the gopher holes in the meadow in the park? Did you hear the Polo Fields are going to be closed an extra three months?

In a world where soccer fields are a disappearing resource, inventiveness is key. I’m happy to say that thanks to coach Toby Rappolt  we have found an all-weather training facility that gives us all the space we need. It is always open. It’s never rained out. You don’t need a permit ever. And you can have all the space you want. My favorite part is how counter-intuitive it is; that is the Rappolt approach to life. The Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate are part of the Bay Area splendor and a driver of the high real estate prices. By training at the beach, we turn the disadvantage into an advantage. Toby’s a bit of a genius that way.

What do the players think?

“They all love it. some of them either have never been to the beach or haven’t been for a long, long time.”
